Assessing Reading Reflection

Reflection:
                                                         Assessing Reading

Extensive learning starts from reading. If a learner doesn’t know how to read then it would be very difficult for learning to occur. There might be learning happen but not that extensive.
Literacy is very important. We can be literate if we know how to read and to write.
The emphasis is so much given in reading because in reading we will be able to comprehend things which can writing cannot give us. When we read, it could be passive but still there is a clear movement of the mind because our mind processes what it has conceived. For example, we say letter “a” because that is what is being comprehended by our mind. Therefore, reading is not just an ordinary exercise. It involves quick processes in our mind.
I observe that literacy in the Philippines is slowly deteriorating. In fact, I can observe students who are poor readers yet they are now in college. What happened then to our literacy program or education as a whole? There might be lapses on the part of the teachers why such student reach such level without scrutinizing the fact that the student is poor in reading skills. It could also be that teachers do not know how to assess the reading skills of their pupils or students. This is very disgusting since reading is the very foundation of learning. So, teachers must be properly oriented on how to assess reading. There must be an order to measure the ability of the student to read.
     What have you learned?
I learned that we should use tools in assessing the macro skills of our students especially in reading. If a person doesn’t know how to read then the best he can do is imitate what has been written or listen to what has been spoken. This is a very limited act since you cannot express well your idea. How can then you con you convey your idea through writing if you do not know how to read. In every class, we should not only focus in one aspect of learning. Multiple intelligences should be applied because that is very necessary especially to practice the reading ability of the student/pupil.
What happened to me after the seminar?
I think I am not anymore the Jecelo before that didn’t know how to assess the reading skills of the students. I am now the Jecelo who knows how to make rubric as a tool in measuring the skills of my students. Thanks to this seminar.
